Washington, DC · October 2026

9:30 welcomes everyone.
Even terror endorsers.

On October 12, the 9:30 Club gave Alex Ovechkin free tickets for life to celebrate his 930th goal, and named him “the inaugural member of THE 930 CLUB.”

Just weeks before that, Ovechkin filmed a campaign ad for Vladimir Putin’s party.

Watch what happened ↓

Plain and simple

Celebrating Ovechkin is morally wrong.

Ovechkin campaigns for Putin. Putin’s Russia bombs Ukrainian parks, homes and children every week. Ovi supports Russia’s terror on Ukraine.

If Ovechkin had endorsed Osama bin Laden, would 9:30 still celebrate him?
How is Putin any different?

The owner handed it over himself.

The venue’s owner, Seth Hurwitz, and his son Sam presented Ovechkin with an oversized golden ticket and a wallet-sized one, giving him access to the concert hall whenever he wants. Then they posed for photos with Capitals owner Ted Leonsis and his wife Lynn.

Hurwitz told him to look at the back of the small ticket. As reported by RMNB:

“It’s good to have goals,” Ovechkin read back.

“Exactly,” Hurwitz replied.

And in the locker room, Hurwitz told Ovechkin:

“We love you.”

Who they celebrated

Ovechkin told us who he stands with.

  1. 2017

    Founded “PutinTeam”

A public movement to back Putin’s re-election. The Kremlin welcomed his support “especially from abroad.”

  2. Sept 2026

Filmed a campaign ad for Putin’s party

A United Russia spot alongside sanctioned Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, days before Russia’s Duma elections.

  3. Sept 17, 2026

“I’m Russian and I support my country.”

Asked by reporters in DC whether he hesitated before filming it: “No.”

  4. Sept 18, 2026

    Latvia banned him for life

A NATO ally declared him persona non grata. Weeks later, 9:30 gave him a lifetime pass.

The same month

While 9:30 celebrated Ovi, the country Ovi supports was killing children.

Liza was six. Her birthday would have been at the end of the month.

The moment captured here shows a Ukrainian woman named Yana whose first thought, as she and her husband, Anton, were pulled alive from the debris of their apartment building after a Russian airstrike last weekend, was for her six-year-old daughter – asking rescuers, desperately, for any word of her. The news, when it came, was the worst. Their little girl, Liza, had not survived. more ↗

Angelina was born in August 2025. A Shahed drone killed her in her stroller, in a park.

A Russian drone hit the town’s central park, beside a café full of families. Angelina’s mother, Inna, was critically wounded and died in hospital. An 11-year-old girl was also killed. Fifteen people were wounded, seven of them children. Ovi endorses Putin.

A Russian missile brought down a five-storey apartment building overnight. Ukraine’s State Emergency Service counted 19 dead, including five children, and 55 injured, seven of them children. Ovi supports his Russian comrades.

“Continuing to use missiles against Ukraine, against our people, our children, is an absolutely conscious choice of terror.”

Rustem Adagamov, posting Angelina’s photo (translated from Russian)

“Russia continues to kill Ukrainian children, while in Washington they keep debating what concessions Ukraine should make so that Russia will agree to stop killing them.”

The UN counted 803 children killed in Ukraine by mid-2026, and it counts only the deaths it can independently verify. OHCHR ↗

This doesn’t compute in DC.

For more than 45 years the 9:30 Club has been the room where everyone in this city gets in. That is why it matters who it chooses to honor. A lifetime golden ticket isn’t a souvenir. It says: this is one of us.

DC and the DMV don’t celebrate people who campaign for a government that bombs parks and apartment buildings full of children. Our landmarks shouldn’t either.

Who decides at 9:30

The 9:30 Club is owned by I.M.P., the company of Seth Hurwitz and Rich Heinecke. Hurwitz presented the ticket himself.

Seth, you said it yourself

“It’s good to have goals.”
Exactly.

We can’t change Ovechkin. But the 9:30 Club decides who it honors. Here are some goals worth having:

  1. 01Don’t support terror.
  2. 02Don’t celebrate people who endorse it.
  3. 03Revoke the lifetime ticket.
  4. 04Stop selling the celebration.
  5. 05Keep 9:30 a place for everyone, but exclude terrorism sympathizers.
